5 Healthy Habits to Focus on This Time of Year
- Prioritize rest. Adults need at least seven hours of quality sleep per night. Remind your clients that this is the time when the body repairs and regenerates itself. When we sleep less than the ideal amount, we cut into our body’s scheduled maintenance period. Tip: Set a reminder an hour before bedtime, as a nudge that it’s time to wind down.
- Eat a healthy breakfast. Skip the sugary cereal and pastries, and front-load the day with a serving of vegetables plus protein and complex carbs for satiety. Bonus points if you can get some ferments into breakfast too, in the form of sourdough, sauerkraut or yogurt. Tip: Prep breakfast the night before if you struggle to find time to eat in the mornings.
- Deal with stress daily. It’s a part of the human experience, and no one is immune to it – but getting ahead of your everyday stress can benefit your body and mind. Laughing at silly dog videos, talking a short walk and chatting with a friend can all help. Tip: When you feel overwhelmed, sigh it out. Sighing triggers the vagus nerve, the primary nerve in the parasympathetic nervous system (aka rest and digest).
- Be pro-active about immune defense. This one is especially important if you have kids or work with them. Dial in your hand-washing habits, mask up when needed and keep up with your healthy habits, even when life gets busy.
