Why GI + Biome Complex Earns a Spot in This Nutrition Practitioner’s Toolbox

By Sara Treffert, FDN, RMT

Enzyme Science has been in my toolbox even before I became a practitioner, and their GI + Biome Complex is a welcome new addition — a unique synergistic blend of four well-researched compounds in verified therapeutic amounts to address GI health from stomach to colon and gut to brain. Even for the sensitive individuals, it’s an unfussy “start here” formula in tiny capsules, taken with or without food and easily stackable with other supplements — music to a practitioner’s ear.

What’s Inside 2 Capsules of GI + Biome Complex?

  1. 200 mg ButyraGen® (Tributyrin + Prebiotic Fibers): Tributyrin, a butyrate (short-chain fatty acid) precursor with more stability, 4-15x enhanced bioavailability, supports gut barrier function, metabolism, immune regulation, neuro support and much more.  The prebiotic fibers (acacia and Sunfiber®) nourish beneficial microbes.*
  2. 8,000 FIP Lipase Thera-blend®: Enzymes support the ButyraGen® across varying digestive pH ranges, vital for dysbiotic guts. Thera-blend® human trial results are expected in 2025.
  3. 30 mg PepZinGI® (Chelated Zinc-Carnosine): Stays in the stomach 2x longer, for superior mucosal repair and indigestion support.
  4. 200 mg Livaux® (Organic Golden Kiwi): Polyphenol-rich, FODMAP-friendly, promotes gut motility and microbiome health including keystone species. Helpful for both occasional diarrhea and constipation.

How to Use in Practice

  • General Use: Titrate to 2 capsules per day anytime. Taking before meals makes direct contact with mucosal tissue and supports digestion.* Sensitive clients may prefer with food to avoid mild zinc-related nausea.
  • Dosing: For chronic cases, may need to slowly titrate to 2 capsules twice daily, possibly three times daily. Note higher amounts (5+ capsules) used more than 6 weeks, may cause a zinc-copper imbalance; monitor with RBC zinc or hair tissue mineral analysis tests while encouraging copper-rich foods (e.g., shiitake mushrooms, sunflower seeds).
  • Duration: Aim for 4 weeks, reassessing progress. Some cases may need a consistent 3–12 months alongside lifestyle changes and other interventions. Improvements often start within 1–2 weeks.
  • Maintenance: 1-2 capsules daily supports ongoing gut health.

Clinical Pearls

  • Tributyrin’s Smell: Its distinct odor signals microbial potency but has no taste. Store in the freezer to minimize smell, or pour capsules into the lid and tip into the mouth. Opening the capsules is not recommended.
  • Fiber & Resistant Starch: Foods like cooked and cooled lentils, green plantain paleo pancakes, roasted sunchokes or taro root and asparagus salad support endogenous butyrate. For every 10 grams of fiber, all-cause mortality decreases by 10%.
  • Constipation Support: Add Kiwi Regularity Chews (2–8 daily) if fiber, hydration and stress management aren’t enough.*
  • GI Flare-Ups: Pair with extra PepZinGI® or Immunolin® powders to soothe the entire top of the GI tract starting in the mouth. DGL Gummies may also provide relief.*

Practitioner Tip

Supplements are to supplement, not replace lifestyle, while appropriate testing can provide valuable insights. Prioritize sleep, whole foods and fibers, filtered water, daily exposure to nature and reduction of stress including environmental toxins. Movement, oral health, having purpose and community are also non-negotiables for a lasting health span.

GI + Biome Complex shines in both stand-alone or complex protocols, faithfully working synergistically behind the scenes to (re)build a healthy host.*
